I was able to apply color maps to the surfaces of the form to denote what module type the system needed. These maps were generated by analyzing both programmatic and structural elements.

My official statement for the presentation:

This pavilion is a literal extension of the school of design, sited in the quad just east of the school. The pavilion consist of three parallelogram modules that moderate light levels of the space through precisely positioning the modules to achieve a prescribed programmatic function. The use of a double skin allows for a wider variety of lighting conditions while providing structural support and creates textured zones that differentiate pin up space from digital presentation space. The pavilion is intended to be assembled in late March, and serve as critique and exhibition space through late May.

This form was generated through the simple manipulations of connection placement along with three basic organizational principals. Each lid was coupled with additional lids through either rotation, mirroring, or translation. The resulting compound components were then again rotated, mirrored or translated as an exploration of the relationship between the benign field condition (fabric) and the crystalline geometry possible. The form investigates the ability of the surface to tear, fold, ripple and encapsulate space.

I am using the same logic for connection on a large scale. Pieces, be it a single lid, or a larger component are allowed to mirror, rotate or shift. Aggregating these started creating large 2d forms and with the addition of a fold a crease I am able generate crystalline geometry that allows the surface to become volumetric.

So for the first project we were assigned to "reappropriate" an everyday object. We are looking at the materials used in drinking coffee [cups, lids, sleeves, & filters]. Using many of those objects along with a fastener [brad, binder clip, rubber band, rivet, or paperclip] we are to generate a surface form with reflects on the purpose of the object.

Thankfully I found a restaurant supply company and bought all the materials I would need to investigate connect possibilities. Initially, I began stacking and connecting cups together. Cups seem to be the most block like object and would seem most suitable for generating a large built form. I quickly found that the lids naturally want to be bound on the sides to form larger configurations. The binder clips can give them both convex and concave forms which allow for spheres and helices.

I still have a lot more investigation to do, and need to find a concept for the larger form in general, but i think the material properties of the lids, along with the nature of the connection is creating a great system to work with.

So I am starting the next stage of my life in Philadelphia, PA. Thanks to all my friends and family I will be attending Penn to chase after my Masters of Architecture. The past months have been long, funemployment gets old quickly so I am thrilled to be getting back to architecture and hopefully diving deeper into what design means to me.

So far Philly has been great. We had some rain the third day I was in town but over all the weather has been AMAZING! Spending 4 weeks in Phoenix sure makes you appreciate 70 degrees. I am living with a friend from high school who picked out a nice basement apartment right off of Rittenhouse Square . The entire Rittenhouse area is one of the nicest parts of historic Philadelphia. The streets are filled with people walking around, enjoying the many sidewalk cafes, and generally living the good life.

The new apartment is really growing on me. Initially, the 30 some-odd soffits were a concern, but I am growing fond of them...they give this place character. My room was initially a den and with the recent addition of a bathroom it is posing as a true bedroom. It lacks a closet, but with some help from friedlt and Ikea, I came up with a storage area that I think is quite cool.

I had to ditch my box spring in Seattle so it was finally time for me to get a big boy bed (again courtesy of Ikea), I love that it has four massive drawers under the platform, providing ample space for most of my clothing.

I think I have a good home base to retreat too, when studio gets out of control, which should start sometime next week. More info soon...I can't wait to get some of the architecture explorations up on the site.
